Have you heard who is playing Captain Marvel? No, you most certainly haven’t, because the role hasn’t been cast yet, and no actresses will be seriously considered for at least another year. But you’ve heard plenty of rumors and suggestions about who’ll play the female superhero in her solo feature, which is due in theaters on November 2, 2018. And so have Kevin Feige and the rest of the team at Marvel Studios.

They’re paying attention to who we want for the role

“We look at it!” Feige admitted this week about your fan list, and likely anything else they find online about who is thought to have been hired or who should be hired for the part and any comments in response. That doesn’t mean they’re just going to pick the popular favorite, however. “Sometimes it’s really enlightening,” added producer Jeremy Latcham. “Sometimes it’s the exact same person that they’ve been saying over and over again that we don’t think is right. It’s always fun to kinda go through it and see what people are up to.”

They’re waiting for the script to know who they want for the role

The above statements were made at an event promoting the home video release of Avengers: Age of Ultron [as quoted by MTV news], and they also explained why it’s way too soon to be even thinking about who will play Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. Basically, they’re not just looking for a face to fit the comic book character or a body that will look good in the costume. “We want to make sure we know who [the character] is before we can start figuring out who should play it,” Latham said.

See, the script (by Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman) isn’t even done, and not only do actresses tend to want to read a script before signing on to a movie, even one as big as this, but the guys at Marvel and their casting agents (including Sarah Finn) also want to see the writing of the character before they find someone to put flesh to those words. “Right now we’re scripting the film,” added Feige figuring out who we want Carol Danvers to be and really what the structure of the movie will be and what her part will be in some of our other Phase 3 films.”

Since the reddit AMA I’ve received so many badass Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel edits! There were so many cool ones I couldn’t pick just one to share – here’s 2 series of 2 Big thank you to contributing artists: @alexmurilloart (right) and Hugo Dourado (left)

They’re also paying attention to who wants to play the role

In an interview directly with IGN, Feige did specifically comment on one suggestion, made by the actress herself. “I love it,” he said regarding Ronda Rousey’s personal campaign to get the role. “That happens occasionally, and I think that’s a testament more to the strength of the characters. Going back to my early days at Marvel, there were always various people campaigning to be Wolverine … Wizard magazine would always have ‘this person wants to play this role!’ It’s a testament to how great the characters are that it appeals to such a wide range of talented, talented people.”

They will probably think of more than the few names the fans are able to think of

Here’s your reminder from Emily Blunt, one of the first names to be regularly suggested and rumored for Captain Marvel, that we are all too limited in our casting dreams:

I think it’s because the list is very short, because we don’t see women in these kind of roles. So I think as soon as you do a role like that, like Charlize [Theron] did or I did, or Rebecca [Ferguson]’s done — there’s like four of us or something. And Jen Lawrence. So I feel like us four, we get talked about — and Angie, Angelina. So it’s a list of like, four women who are going to be considered for those kind of roles. So I think that’s why the rumors happen, because they’re like, “who else? Surely not another girl can wield a gun,” you know what I mean? “A woman doing push-ups? There’s only one who can do that.”
