For a while, it seemed Hollywood was going to keep making movie titles longer and longer and longer. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is one of those recently exemplifying the trend, in a bad way. But perhaps we’re headed in a new direction. One where even Batman v Superman‘s own mega-franchise is learning to be more simple and concise. According to a recent tweet by DC Comics Chief Creative Officer (and DC Films co-head) Geoff Johns, the title of the Justice League movie is just plain Justice League

Previously we’d been led to believe the movie was the first installment of a two-part project. It was being called Justice League Part One (or Justice League: Part One or Justice League, Part One, etc.). And the follow-up was then to be Justice League Part Two. It seemed maybe each section would even get an extra subtitle later on to distinguish them further. But this reveal implies that Justice League, the first, is merely a singular entity, the start of the all-star superhero mega-franchise, a la The Avengers

As The Hollywood Reporter points out, it’s not necessarily as singular as it sounds. In March, screenwriter Chris Terrio hinted that Justice League is being looked at as the conclusion of a trilogy, begun with Man of Steel and continued through Batman v Superman. That implies the narrative of the first Justice League won’t continue on to the next installment of Justice League or the DC Extended Universe in general the same way. It will likely connect, but we can expect the Superman arc in particular to be completed here.

More than just aping the first Avengers movie with the title, this title news also relates to what Marvel is doing with the next couple Avengers sequels. For a long time, the studio showcased the third and fourth installments as a two-parter with the names Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2. But recently they decided not to make it look like the splitting of a single story, as was done and disliked with final Harry Potter and Hunger Games novel adaptations. They’ll connect, but each will have their own title.

Justice League is filming now under the direction of Zack Snyder and is set to hit theaters November 17, 2017, with the sequel scheduled for June 14, 2019.
