Every year there are a few clear winners that emerge from Sundance, and this year there one of those was Mississippi Grind. More specifically, people couldn’t stop raving about star Ben Mendelsohn’s performance as a gambling addict who tries to make one last, big run of things after he befriends someone he thinks is lucky (played by Ryan Reynolds).
It only takes a few seconds of the trailer to see why everyone was heaping on the Mendelsohn love (which will only continue to rise, consider he was next cast in Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One). He looks positively magnetic as a likable but self-destructive gambler who just cannot keep things under control. And in strolls Ryan Reynolds, looking charmed and pained at the same time. The movie looks quite good, but even if the story does end up falling flat, it seems like we’ve already got characters and performances to fall in love with.
Mississippi Grind hits theaters on September 25, 2015, but if you’re a DirecTV subscriber, you can watch it on August 13 thanks to their special deal with distributor A24.
