Bad Boys II

Two months ago, Sony announced that Bad Boys 3 would be released in theaters on February 17, 2017, with Bad Boys 4 to follow on July 3, 2019. Left unsaid, however, were any other key details, such as whether stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence would be returning, or whether Joe Carnahan (The Grey) would be taking over the directing duties from Michael Bay, as rumored.

Now comes word from Will Smith that “there’s a very, very, very strong possibility that you will be seeing a Bad Boys between the next 12 to 16 months.” Smith made the comment during an appearance on a radio show, which squares almost exactly with the release announcement made by Sony. Smith did not, however, confirm whether he would be starring in the movie.

To further whet the appetite for fans, Joe Carnahan implied on social media that he’s actively working on Bad Boys 3.

Back in June, we heard that Carnahan was in “early talks” to re-write and possibly direct the third installment in the action-movie series. That followed on Martin Lawrence’s discussion of the movie. So even though we don’t have official confirmation yet, it certainly sounds very positive for Carnahan’s involvement. His musical references, by the way, are to hip hop duo Run the Jewels and film director and musical composer John Carpenter.

Based on these recent developments, it’s tempting to surmise that Carnahan has already completed a new draft of the screenplay, one that has sufficiently excited Smith to the point that the star is ready to make the movie now. That’s very good news for fans of the first two Bad Boys movies, and for all us who appreciate outlandishly excessive action extravaganzas.
